Nevada Class Profile Drawings by George Bieda

The Nevada Class consisted of just two ships, USS Nevada BB 36, and USS Oklahoma BB 37.  These ships were both built in the 1912 - 1916 time period, and were present at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on 7 Dec 1941.  The USS Nevada was the only battleship to get underway during the attack.  The USS Oklahoma was sunk by dive bombers and was damaged beyond repair.

USS Nevada Artwork by Wayne Scarpaci

In March, 1942, Nevada Gov. E.P. Carville promised each of the crewmen of the newly refurbished USS Nevada, preparing for transit to the North Atlantic, a silver dollar, a cigar and a handshake.  Although the crewmen received their silver dollars on-board in 1944, the handshake and cigar came only  this weekend, along with a special commemorative coin struck at the old Carson City Mint.  Twenty surviving crewmembers of the original 2,500 were on hand to collect.  These 2 works show the mighty USS Nevada BB 36 in action.  The first depicts the morning of 7 DEC 1941, Pearl Harbor, HI.  As the Japanese attacked, NEVADA was the only battleship to get underway.  The second print is of the USS Nevada off Iwo Jima, firing her big guns in support of the U.S. Marines assaulting the island.  The prints, based on Wayne's original paintings, are available in 2 sizes on heavy-weight, acid-free archival stock.  There is also a canvas giclee edition, limited to 100, signed and numbered by the artist.  Enjoy the images, then drop down to the order form to make a purchase.
